Leadpipes

The proper leadpipe is a very important factor when designing a horn. If the taper is short and fast, the upper register of the horn will be favored , but the low register of the horn will be overly resistant with a feeling of "stuffiness". A long, slow taper will favor the low register of the horn, but the high register will be difficult to focus. Wes Hatch has developed a leadpipe that is an excellent compromise between the two tapers. This horn features a powerful, well centered low register, but retains a free, well focused high register.

The drawing of the leadpipe on the mandrel is crucial. It is of utmost importance that the pipe be drawn tightly to the mandrel in order to maintain the dimensions of the design. Wes Hatch employs the services of M/K Drawing in Elkhorn, Wisconsin to draw all of his leadpipes and tubing.
